Type of Therapy

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy for children, young people and families.

Work with adult individuals and parent couples.

Consultation and supervision to professionals working with young people.

Brief, time limited and longer-term therapy.

Specialised assessments for children.

My therapeutic approach is based on the psychoanalytic model. Younger children often do not speak about their difficulties, but they do communicate through play or other modes of expression. Adolescents may be able to talk about how they feel but this is not essential for psychoanalytic psychotherapy to work. Very young children and babies are often seen together with their parents.

A child psychotherapist is trained to observe behaviour and interaction, to understand what is communicated beyond the surface and offer some helpful insight into the emotional state of the child or young person. Sometimes more concrete ways of managing current difficulties are discussed and some helpful strategies are agreed upon.

A typical session is 50 minutes long, although initial meetings often require longer.

About Me & How I Work

I am a Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist trained at The Tavistock & Portman Clinic and full member of the Association of Child Psychotherapists. I have been working therapeutically with children, young people and families for 20 years. I trained within a general CAMHS where I worked with a wide range of issues including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, childhood developmental disorders, sexual and physical abuse, neglect, autism, ADHD, self harm, obsessional behaviour, emotional / behavioural difficulties, tantrums, bereavement, body image, trauma, etc. I went on to work in the perinatal mental health team at Chelsea & Westminster hospital, supporting new and expectant parents, often where there was a risk of family breakdown, clinical depression, bonding and attachment difficulties. I have always worked with a wide range of backgrounds and cultures. I offer therapeutic support for parents and other family members and always see the child in the context of his/her family, and adult in the context of his/her own childhood.

Before my professional training, I worked with children in schools and nurseries, as well as NHS inpatient hospital settings. Currently, I work in private practice in London and teach at post-graduate level.
